Constraining Brans-dicke Gravity with Accreting Millisecond Pulsars in Ultracompact Binaries

چکیده

The five accreting, millisecond X-ray pulsars in ultracompact binaries that were recently discovered with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer provide excellent candidates for constraining the deviations from general relativity described by the Brans-Dicke parameter ωBD. I calculate the expected rate of change of the orbital periods of these binaries and discuss the prospects of constraining ωBD to values that are an order of magnitude larger than current constraints. Finally, I show how measurements of the orbital period derivative in ultracompact binaries can be used to place lower bounds on their orbital inclination. Discovery of a High-latitude Accreting Millisecond Pulsar in an Ultracompact Binary

We have identified the third known accretion-powered millisecond pulsar, XTE J0929−314, with the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer. The source is a faint, high–Galactic-latitude X-ray transient in the Galactic bulge (d & 9 kpc) that was in outburst during 2002 April–June. The 185 Hz (5.4 ms) pulsation had a fractional rms amplitude of 3–7% and was generally broad and sinusoidal, although occasionally...

Pushing the limit on neutron star spin rates

Millisecond X-ray pulsars consist of a rapidly-spinning neutron star accreting from a low-mass stellar companion, and are the long-sought evolutionary progenitors of millisecond radio pulsars, as well as promising candidate sources for gravitational radiation. The population of these sources has grown significantly over the last three years, with the discovery of six new examples to bring the t...

A Brown Dwarf Companion for the Accreting Millisecond Pulsar Sax J1808.4−3658 Lars Bildsten

The BeppoSAX Wide Field Cameras have revealed a population of faint neutron star X-ray transients in the Galactic bulge. King conjectured that these neutron stars are accreting from brown dwarfs with a time-averaged mass transfer rate 〈Ṁ〉 ≈ 10M⊙ yr−1 that is low enough for accretion disk instabilities. We show that the measured orbital parameters of the 401 Hz accreting millisecond pulsar SAX J...

Hot White Dwarf Donors in Ultracompact X-ray Binaries

The discovery of two accreting millisecond X-ray pulsars in binaries with ≈ 43 minute orbital periods allows for a new probe of the donor’s structure. For XTE J1751-305, only a hot white dwarf (WD) can fill the Roche Lobe. A cold He WD is a possible solution for XTE J0929-314, though I will show that evolutionary arguments make a hot WD more likely. In addition to being larger than the T = 0 mo...

Timing and Spectral Properties of the Accreting Millisecond Pulsar Swift J1756.9–2508

SWIFT J1756.9-2508 is one of the few accreting millisecond pulsars (AMPs) discovered to date. We report here the results of our analysis of its aperiodic X-ray variability, as measured with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer during the 2007 outburst of the source. We detect strong (∼35%) flat-topped broadband noise throughout the outburst with low characteristic frequencies (∼0.1 Hz). This makes S...
